There should be some caution exercised when choosing which fights to start, though, as red shadows are far more powerful than others players will find on each floor. In addition, players gain an extra turn against shadows unaware of their presence before an initial strike, a system referred to as Player Advantage. However, no strategy in the world helps players more often in Tartarus than simply striking shadows before they attack the player. This manual control especially helps during the hardest fights yet to be seen in Tartarus' continuous floors of Persona 3 Portable. This method allows players to set their allies to either Guard, Attack, Heal, or perform a myriad of other actions that go beyond the simple directions the AI would take. Yet, there should still be care taken toward elemental resistances, as certain shadows can instantly recover from a knocked-down state if they can Block or Resist certain skills used against them. In addition, since a shadow cannot take action when down until it recovers on its next turn, it becomes a perfect opportunity for players to turn up the offensive. Shadows whose weakness has been recognized have a chance of being knocked down, giving the player an extra turn and causing the creature to take more damage.
